Aphantasia, meditation, and learning to trust yourself.

I see a lot of clients in my practice who worry about not being able to be hypnotized. Most of this concern is rooted in their inability to visualize with their eyes closed. If they don’t see anything during meditation, how can they possibly have a successful hypnosis session?

This is closely related to my post from last week–feeling like an imposter. There is a strong belief in the spiritual community that in order to work with energy you have to be able to see it. I encountered this a lot when I first started on my own journey–I was going to practitioners who constantly asked what I was seeing. Um…nothing? I thought that meant it wasn’t working. If I don’t process energy the same way everyone else does, I must not be able to do spiritual work at all.

What I’ve come to learn is that energy is expressed in infinite different ways, and thus, humans perceive energy in infinite different ways. All physical experiences have an energetic foundation–EVERYTHING is energy before it takes on a physical manifestation. We are constantly working with energy, even when we don’t realize it. Moving energy through our eyes is only one way to perceive it, but just as we process energy with our eyes, we also process it with our ears, skin, mouths, noses, and perhaps most importantly–our souls.

When we see the majority of the collective reading energy in a certain way and feel disappointed that we aren’t having the same experience, a blockage is created that denies us access to the experience that we ARE meant to have. Rather than choosing disappointment or accepting defeat, we can choose to be curious. I don’t see the energy, but how else can I get answers or receive healing? How do I make decisions in my everyday life? Do I hear my own thoughts guiding me? Do I see the guidance when my friends ask me for advice? Do I receive my intuition through simple knowingness?

Not everyone is an expert mathematician, professional athlete, or once in a lifetime musician. Likewise, not everyone is a gifted visual channel, but that just means that they access energy in a different way, and that’s okay.

If you have a hard time sitting in meditation, unable to see anything or you struggle to trust the information that comes through, please know that you’re not broken. You just perceive energy in your own way. And if you hold space for others, your clients need you to understand this. Not everyone receives through sight, and a session only works when it meets a person in the way they actually perceive. In my Timeline Healing Hypnosis Practitioner Course, I teach you how to guide people into deep healing through their own way of receiving, whether they see, hear, feel, or simply know.
